The fastest man on four legs

Wednesday, November 13, 2013 - 04:37

Nov. 13 - In the suburbs of Tokyo lives the fastest man on four legs. For a decade, Kenichi Ito has lived on all fours, perfecting a running style based on the wiry Patas monkey of Africa. Now he holds the world record for four-legged sprinting. Produced by Ruairidh Villar.

NO REPORTER NARRATION (SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) GUINNESS WORLD RECORD HOLDER FOR FASTEST PERSON TO RUN 100 METRES ON ALL FOURS, KENICHI ITO, SAYING: "Ever since I was young people said I looked like a monkey." "And I suppose I always felt I was part ape somewhere inside me," "so I decided to become one." "I once visited a zoo and came across a Patas monkey." "It's the fastest monkey around, and when I saw it running I wanted to copy its style." "So that's when I started running on all fours." Kenichi Ito. Fastest Man on Four Legs. "My best time over 50 metres is 8.2 seconds, and 17.23 seconds for 100 metres." "A monkey wouldn't have to work out in a place like this." "But this training is really important for humans to catch up with monkeys." "It doesn't take much to realise that a cheetah can run 100 metres in five seconds," "and it takes Usain Bolt about nine seconds to cover that distance." "So four legs are much faster than two." "In the future I think all athletes will be running on four limbs." "In four-legged running, we base everything on animals - not humans." "They're my inspiration, and when I'm at home I try to be on four limbs at all times." "I've been on four legs for ten years now, so it feels quite normal to me." "I run about at home but my landlord lives below me and hears the banging." "One time he complained because he thought I'd bought a pet or something." "But to have my footsteps mistaken for a pet was praise to me - I was overjoyed." "I've got lots of certificates, piles of them." "See here where it says: '100 metres on all fours is 17.47 seconds'." "I really want to do better and keep pushing this time down." "When I walk around on all fours I sometimes get reported to the police." "But this is just how I want to live my life," "so I once went into the mountains where I could be on all fours undisturbed." "But a hunter mistook me for a wild boar and tried to shoot me - it was really scary." (SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) UNIDENTIFIED PASSER-BY, SAYING: "I saw him on TV and wanted to give it a try." (SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) UNIDENTIFIED PASSER-BY AND GUINNESS WORLD RECORD HOLDER FOR FASTEST PERSON TO RUN 100 METRES ON ALL FOURS, KENICHI ITO, SAYING: PASSER-BY: "Oh that hurts!" ITO: "Good style though! Welcome to the world of four-legged running!" (SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) GUINNESS WORLD RECORD HOLDER FOR FASTEST PERSON TO RUN 100 METRES ON ALL FOURS, KENICHI ITO, SAYING: "I've been doing four-legged running for ten years now." "And that's precisely the same period I haven't had a girlfriend." "It makes me feel really lonely." "My dream would be to find a girlfriend who would go for dates with me on four limbs." "But there's really no-one like that around." ENDS
