4 WTC marks comeback for Lower Manhattan

Nov. 13 - Four World Trade Center opens 12 years after the 9/11 attacks. Jeanne Yurman reports.

The first office tower at Ground Zero since the September 11, 2001 attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center opened on Wednesday. 4 World Trade Center marks a comeback for the Lower Manhattan site. New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg led the opening ceremony for the smallest of the four main towers on the site where 2,700 people died when hijacked airplanes crashed into the towers. SOUNDBITE: NEW YORK CITY MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG, (ENGLISH) SAYING "As we open its doors, the site once again becomes a part of New York's continued growth, reconnected with the city that surrounds it and the people who live and work in this neighborhood. It took years of hard work and cooperation to make it possible. And this remarkable building is a real credit to those efforts." Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki who designed 4 World Trade Center described the design concept SOUNDBITE: 4 WORLD TRADE CENTER ARCHITECT FUMIHIKO MAKI, (ENGLISH) SAYING "We wanted to make a building that has a strong sculptural effect, but with a quiet presence." The 72-story building stands empty at the moment, although two government agencies have signed leases for half of the building's space. Ultimately the site will include two more office towers and some 550,000 square feet of retail space.
