After hundreds of protesters march on a militia compound in Tripoli, clashes break out, sending protesters on the run.
Libyan police and armed local residents are battling the militia to control an area on the road to Tripoli's international airport.
Some protesters sought refuge as gunshots could be heard from near and afar.
Ambulances rushed dozens of injured to a Tripoli hospital where several were pronounced dead.
Libya is struggling to contain scores of rival militia gangs and former fighters who refuse to disarm.
Fighting still breaks out, leaving numerous injured two years after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi.
