ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION
Police were searching Yale University Monday after receiving reports of a person with a gun on the Ivy League school's campus in New Haven, Connecticut.
Police say Monday morning a man called 911 warning that his roommate was armed and headed towards campus. Subsequently, witnesses reported seeing a man walking on or near campus with a gun.
Much of the campus was kept on lockdown while police searched a wide area. Police did not release a description of the suspect.
Most students are gone this week for the Thanksgiving holiday. But through its website, as well as in emails and texts, the school told students and staff to shelter in place during the search.
(SOUNDBITE) DAVID HARTMAN, NEW HAVEN POLICE SPOKESPERSON:
"We don't know who the suspect is right now. We have a caller who stated his roommate was the person coming towards campus with a gun."
"All he really said was his roommate was on his way to the university, to Yale University, to shoot people."
"Right now we are interviewing several witnesses who did report seeing someone on or near campus with a long gun. A long gun would be a rifle or shot gun but not a handgun."
