U.S. Vice President Joe Biden sits down for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where the main agenda for Biden is China's air defence zone. Beijing's declaration of the air defence zone over an area that includes disputed islands has triggered protests from the U.S., Japan and South Korea. Earlier in the day, Biden told China's vice president Li Yuanchao the U.S. and China must widen cooperation on a practical level, and deliver results. (SOUNDBITE) (English) JOE BIDEN, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, SAYING: "The new model of great power relationship envisioned in the 21st century between China and the United States requires us to expand our practical cooperation and deliver results." Xi says he is after cooperation as well. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) PRESIDENT OF CHINA, XI JINPING, SAYING: "As the world's two largest economies and as two permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, China and the United States shoulder important responsibilities for upholding world peace and stability and promoting human development and progress. To strengthen dialogue and cooperation is the only right choice." The U.S. has made it clear it will stand by its defence treaty obligations with Japan, but it is also reluctant to get dragged into any military confrontation between Japan and China.
