United States Vice President Joe Biden joined world leaders in paying tribute on Friday (December 6) to South African anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela. Mandela died peacefully at home at the age of 95 on Thursday (December 5) after months fighting a lung infection, plunging his nation and the world into mourning for a man revered as a moral giant. Biden reflected on Mandela's achievements and took a moment of silence during his speech at the Yonsei University in Seoul. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN SAYING: "Few people I've ever met in my life, that I had chances to meet every major world leader in the past 35 to 40 years, have met that test like Nelson Mandela. His courage was undeniable, and his loyalty to all the people, all the people of South Africa was redeeming, not just for him but for South Africa. I'd like to ask you to join me to pause to honour Nelson Mandela with a moment of silence." Biden said Mandela possessed wisdom, compassion, courage and forgiveness. He recalled a conversation with the South African leader, when Biden asked Mandela why he was not resentful for being kept in solitary confinement. Biden said Mandela's reply was that he became good friends with his jailers, and they were much better than almost any men and women he met in his career. pon announcement of Mandela's death, tributes began flooding in almost immediately for a man who was an iconic global symbol of struggle against injustice and of racial reconciliation.
