U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel toured the USS Ponce warship in Bahrain on Friday.
He visited the Gulf nation to underscore U.S. commitment to Middle East security.
Policy differences over Iran and Syria have angered Washington's longtime Gulf allies.
(SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. DEFENSE SECRETARY CHUCK HAGEL, SAYING:
"Be assured that the United States of America will not change any of its force posture, or any of its force protection or any of its relationships with its partners here in the Gulf."
The warship will be equipped next year with a new Navy laser weapon, designed to deter attacks by small boats like those used by Iran on the opposite side of the Gulf.
Hagel plans to explain U.S. security thinking to key defense figures in the Middle East in a speech on Saturday.
