ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) A mudslide killed a family of six in a rural part of eastern Minas Gerais on Tuesday (December 17). One of the bodies of the six victims was still missing, but presumed dead. According to the local state Civil Defence, the mudslide was the result of heavy rains hitting the region in recent days. River levels also rose, resulting in the flooding of residential and commercial buildings. Local authorities responded by quickly searching for those missing while also setting up shelters in local schools. In the municipality of close to 5,500 residents 77 people have been displaced and another 39 have become homeless as a result of the calamity, according to local media reports. The Civil Defence confirmed that this now makes eight total weather-related deaths since the rainy season began in October.
