A series of crashes shut down a section of Interstate 90 in Painesville, Ohio, with up to 40 vehicles involved.
Ohio state troopers say the collisions extend for about 11 miles.
No major injuries were initially reported, but the Highway Patrol indicated eastbound lanes would be closed through much of the day.
Troopers say the snowy, icy, winter weather is making driving conditions treacherous.
