Predicting 2014's music stars

Dec 30 - The BBC and MTV compile lists of the artists to watch in 2014. Alicia Powell reports.

With the dawn of a new year comes a new batch of musicians hoping to make it big. Both MTV and the BBC recognize new, up-and-coming artists in respective polls and lists. MTV has turned to viewers to pick the music channel's Brand New for 2014 artist. The list features nine signed acts, with some of the hottest including Banks and British singer-songwriter Sam Smith who has already enjoyed a number one hit. The BBC will reveal the winner of its Sound of 2014 list in the new year. Head of Music at Radio 1, George Ergatoudis is also tipping Smith to perform strongly. SOUNDBITE: George Ergatoudis, Head of Music at Radio 1, saying (English): "He's got a unique voice. A distinctive voice. which is always on of the secrets, one of the ingredients you need for success. So, I'm strongly backing Sam Smith." One youngster tipped for big things and already being dubbed 'the British Justin Bieber', is Elyar Fox. SOUNDBITE: Elyar Fox, singer, saying (English): "My style is pop music but my album is kind of, it's a triangle, it might sound weird it's like a triangle of music it's got different sides to it and the first single going out in January, Do It All Over Again, it's got a bit more clubby pop sound to it." The Head of Talent and Music at MTV UK, Paul Hourican, explained the Brand New list can help artists at the start of their careers. SOUNDBITE: Paul Hourican, Head of Talent and Music at MTV UK, saying (English): "Brand New's been running for five years now and we've, I feel, built a fine reputation of providing good, early support to a number of artists; that includes Adele, Tinie Tempah, Conor Maynard and Wretch 32." The winner of the BBC Sound of 2014 will be revealed on January 10, 2014 and viewer voting is due to close for the MTV Brand New for 2014 on January 31, 2014.
