WWII bomb explodes in Germany, kills one person

Jan. 3 - A World War II bomb explodes and kills one, injures eight, after a digger hits it during an excavation project in near Bonn in Germany. Gavino Garay reports.

TV AND WEB RESTRICTIONS**NONE**~ Scenes from the aftermath of a WWII bomb explosion that killed one person and injured eight. A digger working on an excavation site hit the bomb, triggering the blast. German police spokesman Norbert Hardt: (SOUNDBITE) (German) NORBERT HARDT, SPOKESMAN EUSKIRCHEN POLICE, SAYING: "The operator of a digger hit a bomb from the World War during excavation work in the industrial area here. The bomb exploded and the digger operator was killed. Several other people near the digger were also injured. There are two seriously injured and six lightly wounded." It was powerful enough to blow out windows and shudders and cause damage to nearby homes. Residents were surprised by the damage caused by the explosion. (SOUNDBITE) (German) RESIDENT, RESI SCHERREN, SAYING: "The large window fell inside and all my beautiful flowers, my cactus, everything is broken but of course it can all be replaced." The explosion happened in the city of Euskirchen, which is in North Rhine-Westphalia - Germany's most populous state. Yearly, hundreds of war-time bombs are uncovered -- and most, successfully detonated.
