Christie: "I'm embarrassed and humiliated" over bridge scandal

With his hopes for a 2016 presidential run on the line, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie engaged in a nearly two-hour mea culpa over a bridge lane-closing scandal that emails showed involved some of his closest advisors. Christie denied any role, but fired his deputy chief of staff for lying to him about the episode.

I didn't know about it but it's my responsibility is on the governor. So I'm taking that responsibility and taking actions. Appropriate with executing the responsibility. In a courtroom with the information is today. I come out here today. To apologize. For the people of New Jersey I had no knowledge. Or involvement. In this issue. In its planning or XXQ should. And I am stunned I am embarrassed. And humiliated. By the conduct. Of some of the people. On my -- I was disturbed. By the tone and behavior. An attitude. Callous indifference. That was displayed in the emails -- terminated the employment. Of Richard -- Effective immediately. I terminator appointment because she liked -- I am heartbroken. That someone who I permitted to be in that circle of trust. For the last five years betrayed my trust not a mystery. If you ask for something and so we deceive you tell us who doesn't exist. What's the problem. Are you sure. Yes. You've searched three emails yes. You don't have anything now. OK we involved in any way no. Any knowledge no -- After that. What do you do I am quiet but I am not a bully and what I will tell you is that the folks who have worked with me over a long period of time. Would I believe tell you that -- tough. What I've shown over the last four years -- told we've sent here. That I'm willing to compromise. That would work with others this is the fact is. That mistakes were made and I'm responsible. For those mistakes but the test of leadership it's. When you find it out what do you do. And I'm sick and have to do this. It's difficult personally to do. It's my job.
