India orders US to withdraw diplomat from New Delhi

Jan 10 - The U.S. confirms it will withdraw one of its diplomats from New Delhi at India's request after Washington effectively expelled Devyani Khobragade. Deborah Gembara reports.

As expelled diplomat Devyani Khobragade arrived in New Delhi, the diplomatic row between the U.S. and India continued to fester. India's 39-year-old deputy consul-general to NY, had little to say about charges of visa fraud and lying to U.S. authorities. SOUNDBITE: Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade saying: "No comments. Thank you, I said, no comments right now. I just want to thank my nation for the support that they have given me that is it." The deal which allowed Khobragade to return to India without facing charges was expected to mend the rift - but on Friday --- Washington confirmed that a U.S diplomat is being ordered to leave New Delhi. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki. SOUNDBITE: U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki saying: "This has clearly been a challenging time in the U.S.-India relationship. We expect and hope that this will now come to closure and the Indians will take significant steps with us to improve our relationship and return it to a more constructive place." Psaki did not say which U.S. diplomat was headed home.
