ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)
The son of executed Ohio killer Dennis McGuire says watching his father's execution was the most awful moment in his life.
Dennis McGuire Jr., his wife, and sister witnessed the execution in which a new lethal drug combination was administered for the first time in the United States.
McGuire describes his father's final moments as torture.
"My dad began gasping and struggling to breathe. I watched his stomach heave, I watched him try to sit up against the straps on the gurney. I watched him repeatedly clinch his fists. It appeared to me he was fighting for his life but suffocating. The agony and terror of watching my dad suffocate to death lasted more than 19 minutes," said McGuire.
Dennis McGuire Sr. was placed on death row after he was convicted of raping and murdering a pregnant woman.
His family is now planning to file a federal lawsuit claiming McGuire's execution violated the 8th amendment prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment.
