ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Several hundred people demonstrated in Madrid on Friday in support of the people of the northern Spanish city of Burgos, who managed through various days of rallies to halt the local government's plan to convert a street in the Gamonal neighborhood into a tree-lined boulevard. The demonstration in Madrid was organized through social media and, although news of the decision to permanently halt the project came shortly before the Madrid rally was due to begin, the protest went ahead. The neighborhood of Gamonal has become a symbol of resistance after residents began protesting on last Friday to demand that the local government stop building works on a main boulevard which people suffering the effects of Spain's financial crisis believe was an unnecessary expense. On Friday demonstrators in Madrid chanted slogans against the government of Mariano Rajoy and urged neighborhoods in the city to take part in a revolution against the government they said is corrupt. After marching through the center of Madrid, police and demonstrators scuffled, leading most protesters to leave. But others were encircled by riot police who began identifying the remaining 50 or so protesters one by one before letting them leave.
