Bombs and bloodshed rock Baghdad as the death toll mounts. Over the weekend, at least 14 people are killed and 55 wounded in the capital. In one incident, armed men attacked a juvenile prison, killing a guard, wounding four and releasing 20 inmates, police said. One eyewitness describes what he saw. (SOUNDBITE) (ARABIC) UNIDENTIFIED MALE EYEWITNESS, SAYING: "There was an explosion near the juvenile prison followed by gunfire and more explosions. No one knew what happened. There was flesh scattered on the ground. Some people said it was a suicide bomber attack while others said it was a car bomb attack, but we have seen them. They were suicide bombers. We saw their bodies." Elsewhere in Baghdad, rubble, destroyed buildings and car bodies litter the site of another deadly blast. Two years after U.S. troops left Iraq, violence has climbed back to its highest levels since the Sunni-Shi'ite bloodletting of 2006-2007, when tens of thousands of people were killed. The United Nations says nearly 9,000 people died violently in Iraq last year -- most were civilians.
