Jan. 22 - A California transit officer is accidentally shot and killed by his colleague during a probation search. Linda So reports.

Authorities are calling it a "terrible and tragic accident." A Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer shot and killed by another officer during a probation search at this apartment complex in California. SOUNDBITE: ALAMEDA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT J.D. NELSON, SAYING: "We're in the process of going through the whole scene and reconstruct what happened and ultimately find out what lead up to this." Police say four BART officers were conducting the search at the home of a robbery suspect on Tuesday. As they entered the apartment, they had their weapons drawn. SOUNDBITE: ALAMEDA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT J.D. NELSON, SAYING: "They knew the suspect was in custody, they were doing a probation search of his apartment in connection with the robberies, and then they went in obviously, you don't know who's inside of somebody's apartment, so that's why they did the way they did." Police say during the search, one of the officers accidentally discharged his weapon. That single bullet struck and killed another officer, marking the agency's first death of one of its own.
