Washington, New York brace for winter storm

Jan. 21 - The White House and other Washington tourist attractions were covered in a fresh layer of snow as the U.S. East Coast braced for a huge storm. Deborah Gembara reports.

A fresh layer of snow could be seen at the White House and at some of Washington's most popular tourist attractions ahead of a storm that could dump as much as foot of snow on parts of the northeastern U.S. Determined visitors negotiated slick steps and already bitter temperatures. (SOUNDBITE) (English) TOURIST FROM NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, SAYING: "It's just cool to see all of the historic sites of what our nation was founded upon, so it's exiting, cold." (SOUNDBITE) (English) HENRY AYALA, TOURIST FROM NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, SAYING: "It's a lot of snow and it's going to be cold tomorrow but that's ok with us." For some, the white stuff was as much of an attraction as the monuments. (SOUNDBITE) (English) JOE ZAGURSKY, TOURIST FROM FLORIDA, SAYING: "It's awesome, we love it, we don't get this ever in Florida." In New York's Time Square, snowy streets and a sense of dread about the approaching cold front. (SOUNDBITE) (English) REENA, FROM NEW JERSEY, SAYING: "I am entering my eighth month of pregnancy and I am done with the snow. So I'm ready for it to be warm again." (SOUNDBITE) (English) WINSTON, RESIDENT OF NEW YORK, SAYING: "Oh Lord, the snow. It's too much for me now." Temperatures along the East coast are expected to plummet to between 10 and 25 degrees. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers were ordered to stay home ahead of what is forecast to be the heaviest snowfall in three years.
