Jan. 27 - Auschwitz survivors commemorate the liberation of the Nazi death camp in Poland 69 years ago as part of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

This is Auschwitz today. 69 years ago Soviet forces liberated the Nazi death camp. Survivors have returned as part of the annual International Remembrance Day to remember the millions of victims of the Holocaust. . (SOUNDBITE) (Polish) FORMER AUSCHWITZ SURVIVOR, GRZEGORZ TOMASZEWSKI, SAYING: "Liberation, I remember how they burnt down the crematoria, how they were also burning down all the rooms with the clothes of the victims. I remember the awful sound of howling sirens. I was in such a small house and I saw it all through the window. Fear, anxiety ..." Israel sent its largest delegation ever from its parliament. A survivor spoke of his journey from the camp. (SOUNDBITE) (Hebrew) ISRAELI AUSCHWITZ SURVIVOR, NOAH KLIEGER, SAYING: "Today, 69 years after we left this hell called Auschwitz, we are here again as proud people, as proud citizens of the new Jewish state that rose out of the ruins of European Jews." Nazis killed about 1.5 million people between 1940 and 1945 most of them Jews at the death camp. Candles are placed at a monument to remember those who died. Others return to a place that has marked them for life.
