Muslims under fire in Central African Republic

Jan. 28 - A family fleeing the capital of the Central African Republic come under fire as violence against Muslims escalates. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

A man points to the spot where a pickup truck came under fire in Central African Republic. He says children are still inside. They flee for their lives. Muslims are now under attack in the country's Capitol City. They have run out of places to go. (SOUNDBITE)(French) MUSLIM MAN WHO WAS IN CAR THAT CAME UNDER ATTACK, MOHAMMED, SAYING: "Over there we were going to airport because we want to go to Chad. When we got here, the car broke down. They started shooting at us. They threw grenades at us. That's why we came here. But they told us to leave. But leave to go where?" The UN is warning of escalating reprisals against Muslims and is urging foreign governments to do more to stop the bloodshed. Almost one million people have been displaced by fighting since the mostly Muslim Seleka rebels seized power last March in the majority Christian country. Christian militias have since taken up arms with at least 2,000 people killed in the tit-for-tat violence.
