The U.S. Coast Guard is showing off a historic cocaine haul in Miami Beach - 45 bales of cocaine weighing 2,500 pounds, worth $37 million dollars.
The drugs were seized off a 25-foot speed boat south of the Dominican Republic on January 22nd.
(SOUNDBITE) LT. CMDR. GABE SOMMA, U.S. COAST GUARD SAYING:
"Coast Guard helicopter went out to pursue the go-fast vessel - fired warning shots to get them to stop. When the go-fast vessel continued, they began jettisoning their packages overboard. The Coast Guard helicopter then fired disabling fire into the engine to stop the vessel."
Four men were taken into custody.
This was a joint operation between the U.S. and the British fleet, which have been working together in the region for a few years. But this is the first time a U.S. helicopter has launched from a British ship.
