Georgia resident blame officials for snow-related traffic problems

Jan. 30 - Georgia residents say they're furious that state officials didn't take proper precautions to ensure safety ahead of a storm that stranded thousands of people and resulted in 1,521 crashes. Deborah Gembara reports.

A day after a snow storm left thousands stranded on Atlanta's highways, locals say the government should have been better prepared. SOUNDBITE: Georgia resident saying: "The disappointment was in the leadership of our state. We should've been able to shut the schools down. We had no emergency evacuation plans. It was CHAOTIC." SOUNDBITE: Georgia resident saying: "The superintendent, he needs to pay for this. He needs to answer. EVERYBODY knew this weather was coming." Governor Nathan Deal, on Friday, ordered National Guard soldiers to help drivers, as they tried to returned to their abandoned cars. He also apologized. SOUNDBITE: Governor Nathan Deal saying: "I accept responsibility for the fact that we did not make preparation early enough to avoid these consequences. As a parent, I certainly understand how someone would feel if their child was either on a school bus or at a school, and unable to come back home. " More then 2,000 students didn't make it home the night of the storm. Colonel Mark W. McDonough of the Georgia State State Police offered and update. SOUNDBITE: Colonel Mark W. McDonough of the Georgia State State Police, saying: "As of 10 am this morning, 1,521 traffic crashes were worked on by state troopers - 184 injuries and still only one weather related fatality here in the Metro Atlanta area. We have assisted 1,185 motorists during that period of time: changing tires, getting them off the roadway, taking care of any needs they might have." Will it be enough to cool anger over the slow response? Governor Deal, whose up for re-election, will find out this November when Georgians head to the polls.
