Jan. 31 - A California man discovers a rare aluminum penny he has could make him a millionaire. Linda So reports.

Randy Lawrence never thought a penny he kept in the trunk of his car could be worth millions. This California man inherited the coin 30 years ago from his father who worked at the Denver Mint. SOUNDBITE: COIN OWNER RANDY LAWRENCE, SAYING: "We assume he must've felt it was just another souvenir from his days of working at the mint." It turns out it's a rare 1974 D aluminum penny. Only about 10 of them were ever made. And it could be worth a "pretty penny." SOUNDBITE: COIN OWNER RANDY LAWRENCE, SAYING: "Minimum $250,000 - I've heard estimates of up to $2 million and even higher." The penny was certified and authenticated by the owner of this La Jolla coin shop. SOUNDBITE: LA JOLLA COIN SHOP OWNER MICHAEL MCCONNELL, SAYING: "Did a little bit more further research on it, and realized it might be something a little more special than what I originally thought." The two plan to sell the penny at an auction this spring. SOUNDBITE: COIN OWNER RANDY LAWRENCE, SAYING: "I have a son who just started San Diego State with out-of-state tuition, so a college fund there, a second one there coming up to college, so that." Lawrence wants to donate at least $100,000 to homeless programs.
