War rages in Syria as peace talks conclude

Jan. 31 - A contentious week-long first round of Syrian peace talks ended Friday with no progress towards ending the civil war with Damascus not committed to return. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

As peace talks conclude in Geneva, war rages in Syria. Amateur video which can not be independently verified by Reuters shows no let up in the fight. On Friday International mediator Lakhdar Brahimi announced the date for the next talks, but it is not clear who will show up. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED NATIONS MEDIATOR LAKHDAR BRAHIMI SAYING: "I suggested that we resume, on the basis of an agreed agenda, that we are going to prepare and send to them, that we meet on the 10th of February. The delegation of the opposition agreed to this date. That of the government said that they needed to consult with Damascus first." As violence erupts after aid was delivered to a Palestinian neighborhood in damascus -- there was no progress in Geneva to provide relief for the besieged city of Homs. But in Switzerland Brahimi is still optimistic. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED NATIONS MEDIATOR LAKHDAR BRAHIMI SAYING: "Both sides are committed to discussing the full implementation of the Geneva communiqué to achieve a political solution for Syria." The conflict in Syria began almost three years ago and has already claimed the lives of more than 130,000 people.
