While others may enjoy skiing, sledding, or ice skating during the cold winter months, enthusiasts on Lake Eire in Pennsylvania enjoy ice boating.
These boats skim the ice at 40 miles per hour. They are boats outfitted with three skates, or "runners."
(SOUNDBITE) ICE SAILOR DAVE HEINTZENRATER SAYING:
"The thrill's when you realize how fast the boat will accelerate in the wind with the wind power."
(SOUNDBITE) ICE SAILOR SCOTT HEINTZENRATHER SAYING:
"Oh, the heart is pumping, adrenaline is rushing, it is quite exciting."
And it's not easy.
Practice makes perfect with this sport, which proves challenging for beginners.
Once they figure it out -- however -- it's a ride with views that are sure to impress.
