Supporters of Egypt's military surrounded cars containing lawyers representing deposed former Egyptian president Mohamed Mursi and shouted at the occupants as they arrived on Saturday (February 1) at the Cairo court where the trial of the former president is held. As defence lawyer Selim Al-Awa drove to the hearing a female protester banged on his car shouting: ''You are a traitor to your country.'' Al-Awa, a former presidential candidate, is representing Mursi in one of four cases against him. Saturday's session concerns charges faced by Mursi of inciting violence against protesters at a demonstration in 2012, when he was president. This case concerns violence outside the presidential palace during unrest in late 2012 ignited by a presidential decree that expanded Mursi's powers. Around a dozen people were killed. Other charges faced by Mursi in separate trials include plotting with foreigners such as Hamas and Hezbollah to carry out a terrorist conspiracy against Egypt, which could result in him facing the death penalty.
