A nationwide alert has been issued for 40-year-old Michael David Elliot, a convicted murderer who was supposed to be serving life behind bars - but has now escaped from prison. (SOUNDBITE) DAN HEYNS, MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS DIRECTOR SAYING: "It appears he took a uniform from a prisoner working in the kitchen. Those uniforms are white. That white uniform he was wearing allowed him to blend into snow on the ground. He made his way to our perimeter fences. Moved them and bent them." Elliot fled on foot and carjacked a woman who later escaped unhurt when he stopped for fuel at a gas station in Indiana. (SOUNDBITE) DAN HEYNS, MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS DIRECTOR SAYING: "lt was at that point she was able to escape, use her cell phone to cal 9-1-1. Police in Indiana responded but unfortunately prisoner Elliot had left in her vehicle so we are still pursuing him at this time. He is still at large. We are working with national law enforcement and Indiana law enforcement and our top priority is getting him back in custody." Elliot was convicted of killing four people in 1993, and was serving four life sentences at Michigan's Ionia Correctional Facility. Authorities say he should be considered dangerous, and warned the public not to approach him if they see him.
