Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater is proving he's still the surfing king, picking up his 66th win on the Association of Professional Surfers tour and winning a $20,000 grand prize.
He won the Volcom Pipe Pro with a series of electrifying performances Wednesday - a great start to his 24th season on the world tour.
Slater, who celebrates his 42nd birthday next Tuesday, ended the event with five of the top 10 wave scores of the competition, including a perfect 10. He also owned the top heat score of the event - 19.77 out of 20, posted in the Round of 32 in the morning session.
(SOUNDBITE) KELLY SLATER, SURFING CHAMPION SAYING:
"There's a couple of waves I got right into the sweet spot and we could just barely make the wave. It did feel like there was room to work on things and the opportunity was there."
