RESENDING WITH FULL SCRIPT EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: PART AUDIO AS INCOMING ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION). STORY: Indonesia on Friday (February 7) granted parole for Schapelle Corby, the 36-year-old Australian woman who was convicted in 2005 of smuggling 4.1 kg (9 lb) of marijuana into the resort island of Bali. Indonesia's Minister of Law and Human Rights Amir Syamsuddin said Corby was among hundreds of applicants whose parole was approved on Friday. "Thank God this day has been resolved with (parole for) as many as 1,291 applicants," Syamsuddin said in a news conference at the ministry in Jakarta. "She is there, included in the 1,291 applicants." Corby, who originally was from Queensland's Gold Coast, was convicted in May of 2005 and sentenced to 20 years in prison. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono granted a clemency plea in 2012, reducing her sentence by five years because of good behaviour. She has served almost nine years at a prison in Denpasar. Corby has always maintained her innocence and her lengthy jail term was criticized by many in Australia. Indonesia has some of the strictest drug trafficking laws in the world. A group of Indonesian legislators this week called for the high-profile prisoner to serve out her full term. Corby's sister, Mercedes Corby, was at the prison where Schapelle is being held on Friday. Speaking to reporters before Syamsuddin's announcement, she said the family has been waiting for news on the parole application for a long time. "We've been waiting on this for a year and a half," she said. "She's been eligible for parole for a year and a half, so we've been waiting for it to be assigned and please give us some privacy." Indonesia's Justice Ministry declined to say when Corby would be released from prison.
