It was the first royal engagement of the year for the Duchess of Cambridge -- visiting the National Portrait Gallery in London for its annual gala.
Catherine, who is a patron of the gallery, wore a diamond necklace borrowed from the Queen for the occasion.
In her speech she paid tribute to its work and achievements.
SOUNDBITE: Duchess of Cambridge saying (English):
"The Gallery's achievements are exceptional. They hold the most extensive collection of portraits in the world, and their unique and brilliant exhibitions never fail to inspire us all."
Funds raised at the gala will help the gallery with the acquisition of portraits of outstanding national importance - that now includes a painting of the Duchess hanging next to that of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
