U.S. President Barack Obama sat down with King Abdullah the second of Jordan at a retreat in California Friday evening. The two discussed a host of issues, including new ways to pressure the Syrian government to end the civil war, and Jordan's role in housing some 600,000 Syrian refugees. (SOUNDBITE) (English) BARACK OBAMA, UNITED STATES PRESIDENT, SAYING: It puts a great strain on the resources of Jordan and it's very important for us to make sure we're supportive of the kingdom in accommodating all these refugees. At the same time, both of us recognize that we can't just treat the symptoms. We'll be working aggressively at the United Nations level and at the regional level to provide basic humanitarian assistance and access to people who are suffering tremendously as a consequence of the war inside of Syria. (SOUNDBITE) (English) KING ABDULLAH II OF JORDAN, SAYING: Our major concern in the area is the rise of extremism in Syria, the sectarian violence and if we don't find a solution, the spill over in the region and the affect that will have. But again I'm sure our views are similar and we will be working very closely with you sir and our western friends to try to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people as quickly as possible Obama also said the U.S. will be providing Jordan with a one billion dollar loan guarantee that will help the country access international capital markets.
