It's the waiting game in Italy to see who becomes the next prime minister.
Just days ago, Erico Letta was asked to stand down by his Democratic Party for not doing enough to pull the country out of a recession.
Now, all eyes are on Matteo Renzi, the Mayor of Florence, who's expected to become the youngest Italian prime minister ever.
But President Giorgio Napolitano had to have consultations before any announcement was made.
(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) ITALIAN PRESIDENT, GIORGIO NAPOLITANO, SAYING:
"Well, you've finished your work and I've finished mine, I felt obliged to give consultations as quickly as possible so that there will be space and serenity for the next job of the person who will be appointed to form a government. They will need all the time necessary for consultations, insights and understandings."
Among those who attended -- ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi. He said he will ask the government to take a "firm" position on Europe to change their austerity policies and take a path toward "growth and development."
He was not welcomed by demonstrators outside the presidential palace.
(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) ANTI-BERLUSCONI DEMONSTRATOR, NANDO BONESSIO, SAYING:
"Napolitano should absolutely not have summoned Berlusconi and allowed him to represent a political party that has other qualified members, instead of a criminal convicted by three levels of justice."
As the wait drags on, a Democratic Party source told Reuters that Renzi, age 39, will be asked to put together a government Monday.
That would make him the third prime minister in a row appointed by the president.
According to polls, however, most Italians want a new prime minister to emerge from elections, rather than political consultations.
