These were Pakistan army operations in a volatile tribal region called Mohmand Agency on Monday. That's when fragile peace talks between the government and the Taliban also broke down. It happened after a Taliban fringe group operating in the area said it had executed 23 soldiers kidnapped in 2010. In a video statement, it said the executions were revenge for army operations in their area, and the killing of their own fighters by Pakistani armed forces. (SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) PERSONAL ASSISTANT OF CHIEF OF TEHREEK-E-TALIBAN, PAKISTAN'S BRANCH OPERATING IN MOHMAND TRIBAL AGENCY, OMAR KHURASANI, SAYING: "The fact is that this government and the intelligence agencies do not want to bring peace to Pakistan. During the present talks, the government and security agencies have started a process of killing our colleagues who were in their prisons." The executions suggest the central Taliban leadership in Pakistan isn't in control of its fringe groups. Clerics representing the Taliban side in the talks were unhappy with Monday's turn of events. (SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) TALIBAN INTERMEDIARY FOR TALKS WITH GOVERNMENT, MAULANA YOUSAF SHAH, SAYING: "Even we are very upset by the incident in Mohmand Agency. But if we could have held a joint meeting today, we could have joined our heads to investigate the incident, to try and prevent further such incidents and think of ways to bring complete peace to the country." The Pakistani Taliban want to set up an Islamist state, but are deeply divided. So even if a deal with the central leadership could be reached, it's unlikely to actually result in peace. -- Pakistan peace talks with Taliban collapse after killings Peace talks between the Pakistani government and Taliban break down after insurgents say they executed 23 soldiers as revenge for army operations in a volatile tribal region.
