The BRIT Awards is the UK's biggest music award show and so the red carpet was filled with some of Britain's biggest musical talent with the exception of David Bowie, who was nominated for Best British Male.
SOUNDBITE Singer, Boy George, saying (English):
"No, he's not going to come. You don't come to things like this when you're Bowie. You know you just... he's probably sent someone with a silk cushion to hopefully collect the award he's going to get for his album."
That person with the silk cushion was Kate Moss who delivered Bowie's acceptance speech concerning Scottish independence.
SOUNDBITE Model Kate Moss, saying (English):
"Scotland, stay with us!"
The big winners of the evening were Arctic Monkeys who picked up British Group, and Best British Album of the Year. Their two illuminated gongs were only matched by One Direction who scooped the Global Success and Best Video awards.
SOUNDBITE One Direction member Niall Horan, rapping (English):
"This is our second year in a row to win the Global Success Award. We've been here three years now, coming here operating on my crutches and here, oh man..."
SOUNDBITE One Direction member Liam Payne, saying (English):
"We're clearly not rappers."
Although they shied away from the red carpet arrivals, there were some big international stars at the event but they were there to either pick up awards or perform.
Bruno Mars performed at the event and picked up Best International Male while Lorde picked up Best International Female.
SOUNDBITE Best International Female, Lorde, saying (English):
"You don't expect to win an award when you're up against like Gaga, and Janelle Monae, and Pink, and Katy Perry so um, I'm really grateful and stoked!"
The biggest surprise of the evening was an appearance by Prince who not only had a selfie on stage but also gave out the Best British Female to Ellie Goulding.
Although it was supposed to be a surprise, Beyonce's performance at the Brits proved to be one of the worst kept secrets in showbiz. However, to many it was the highlight of the 2014 BRIT Awards.
