El Greco's "The Disrobing of Christ" has hung in this Toledo cathedral's sacristy for centuries. And it's been lovingly restored for the city's celebration of the 400th anniversary of the artists' death. Rafael Alonso has restored 90 El Grecos, but he says this one was the crowning moment of his career. SOUNDBITE: Rafael Alonso, El Greco restorer, saying (Spanish): "I'm from here; I've seen this painting since I was a child. El Greco for me is a cultural reference and I can't imagine Christ's face in any other way except how El Greco painted it in 'The Disrobing'." Toledo and Madrid will hold a series of exhibitions, conferences and concerts to celebrate the artist, who was "a forgotten painter" and then rediscovered, according to Rafael Baron from Madrid's Prado museum. El Greco influenced several artists including Picasso, who according to Baron, said that the painter was the real inventor of cubism. The Spanish Renaissance artist used bold colors and brush strokes and chose a unique and innovative path. The main attraction of the commemorations, the biggest ever exhibition of El Greco paintings in Toledo, runs from March 14-June 14.
