There will be no gold medal for the USA in Olympic hockey this year.
Canada has edged closer to the top spot and will face off with Sweden after soundly defeating the U.S. 1-0 in the semifinal round.
Jamie Benn scored early in the second period for the game's only goal.
It was a much-anticipated grudge match between the two teams, since Canada defeated their American neighbors in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.
Team captain David Backes spoke of that rivalry ahead of the game.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. ICE HOCKEY TEAM CAPTAIN DAVID BACKES SAYING:
"It's a lot of different faces, different characters. I think there's a little bit, you know, they stopped us from getting to our goal that we had in Vancouver and there's a little extra incentive to reach that goal this tournament, whether it's Canadians or whoever we may face in the semi-final game."
Emotions were high at a Washington DC sports bar, where the mood was both celebratory and somber.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) TEAM CANADA FAN, HANNA KUBAS, SAYING:
"Man, just that last minute was the most intense minute, and it was just elating. It was just the best. It was like they won the gold medal."
(SOUNDBITE) (English) TEAM USA FAN, ROGER FONS, SAYING:
"It hurts. It just hurts."
Hockey-crazed canucks were still buzzing from a 3-2 overtime win over the US in the women's final.
A defeat that was written all over the faces of the U.S. team.
Canada and the United States have clashed 18 times on Olympic ice with Canada winning 12... making the stakes even higher for the next Olympic showdown.
