Earlier this month, Rancho Feeding Corporation of Petaluma, California, recalled 8.7 million lbs of beef. The USDA said the slaughterhouse had processed "diseased and unsound animals." Now, local media report that the slaughterhouse snuck in sick cows. The USDA calls the alleged wrongdoing an "intermittent circumvention of inspection requirements." Nicolette and Bill Niman are local ranchers whose grass-fed cows were slaughtered at the plant. For them, the recall is a loss. (SOUNDBITE) NICOLETTE NIMAN SAYING: "The recall is far too broad, it doesn't look at anybody's individual situation, it just includes everything." (SOUNDBITE) BILL NIMAN SAYING: "Unfortunately, even if you're Dianne Feinstein and you call the USDA or you want to talk to secretary Vilsack, he's going to say he can't talk about it, so it's really difficult to come up with a solution." Bill Niman says he witnessed every single animal of his undergo inspection at the plant. And appeals to the government aren't getting him far... The USDA says an investigation is ongoing.
