The killing of soldier Lee Rigby by two British Muslim converts in broad daylight on a London street shocked the nation.
After the killing they stayed at the scene trying to justify their actions to passers-by.
Michael Adebolajo are starting a whole-life jail term...Michael Adebowale one of 45 years minimum.
Outside the court on Wednesday police read a statement from the victim's family welcoming the sentences.
(SOUNDBITE)(English) DETECTIVE INSPECTOR PETE SPARKS SAYING:
"We feel that no other sentence would have been acceptable and we would like to thank the judge and the courts for handing down what we believe to be the right prison terms."
In police video shown to the jury during the men's trial last year Adebolajo tells officers the pair deliberately targeted a soldier.
(SOUNDBITE)(English) MICHAEL ADEBOLAJO, SPEAKING DURING POLICE INTERVIEW, SAYING:
"Between us we decided that the soldier is the most fair target because he joins the army with kind of the understadning that your life is at risk when you join the army so we sat in wait and it just so happened that he was the soldier that we spotted first."
Far-right demonstrators gathered outside the court for Wednesday's sentence hearing.
The attack last May provoked a rise in hate crimes against Muslims in Britain and anti-Islamic street protests.
