The Oscar Pistorius murder trial opened dramatically on Monday, with a neighbor's testimony. Michelle Burger told the court that "bloodcurdling screams" woke her and her husband, followed by gunshots. Her voice can be heard, followed by a translator: (SOUNDBITE) (Afrikaans followed by consecutive translation into English) WITNESS, MICHELLE BURGER, SAYING: "Just after her screams, my lady, I heard four shots. It was four gun-shots that I heard…" (SOUNDBITE) (English) PROSECUTOR, GERRIE NEL, SAYING: "Did that have any effect on you?" (SOUNDBITE) (Afrikaans followed by consecutive translation into English) WITNESS, MICHELLE BURGER, SAYING: "It was very traumatic for me. You could hear that it was bloodcurdling screams and it leaves you cold. You can't translate it into words, the anxiousness in her voice and fear." The Paralympic star known as "bladerunner" has pleaded not guilty to murdering his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day last year. Defence Lawyer Kenny Oldwage spoke on Pistorius' behalf: (SOUNDBITE) (English) DEFENCE LAWYER, KENNY OLDWAGE, SAYING: "This allegation is denied in the strongest terms. In fact, at the time of the tragic accident which lead to Reeva's death, we were in a loving relationship." Pistorius maintains Steenkamp's death was a tragic accident. He says he mistook her for an intruder hiding in the bathroom.
