It's the moment for which Rio's elite samba schools have been waiting all year - a chance to show off their skills and costumes in the city's Sambadrome.
Six of the Grupo Especial or elite group performed in front of a 78,000-strong audience on Sunday.
And this year is an exceptional one for Imperio da Tijuca which led the parade.
The samba school rose to the elite class when they won last year's Series A section.
And they're determined to stay in top form.
SOUNDBITE: Igor Perez, Imperio da Tijuca member, saying (Portuguese):
"This school is a family. I have my cousins here … and we are going to keep our school in the Grupo Especial."
SOUNDBITE: Henrique da Silva, percussionist, saying (Portuguese):
"It's that anxiety… seeing that audience here in Sapucai honouring us. It's extremely gratifying."
The second six Grupo Especial samba schools will showcase their skills in the Sambadrome on Monday night.
