New Orleans kicks off its Mardi Gras celebrations long before the Fat Tuesday parade.
Lundi Gras, which means "Fat Monday", is held, as its name suggests, on the Monday before Mardi Gras.
And contrary to popular belief, the oldest Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States are in Mobile, Alabama, where "Fat Monday" is also celebrated.
The Mardi Gras parade is held on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent.
