Rescuers pull three children from a vehicle as it tosses and turns in the Florida surf Tuesday.
Authorities say their mother reportedly drove them into the Atlantic Ocean.
Lifeguards and bystanders at Daytona Beach pulled the children, ages 3, 9 and 10, out of the van.
The mother is undergoing a mental health evaluation. Her name has not been released.
Sheriff Ben Johnson of the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
(SOUNDBITE) SHERIFF BEN JOHNSON OF THE VOLUSIA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAYING:
"At this time, she still is in the hospital and it is under the investigation. We have child protection team at this time interviewing the children and we're looking to see if criminal charges are going to be appropriate, or if this is a medical issue. At this time we don't know, it's early in the investigation, but we want to get to the bottom of it to determine which is the correct way to go about it."
The beach is popular for legal driving on the hard-packed sand.
But a beach safety officer saw the minivan with South Carolina tags driving recklessly.
Bystanders tried to get the driver to stop, then the minivan suddenly headed for the water.
An investigation is ongoing.
