They say a dog's a man's best friend. But Arnold -- a two-hundred pound American alligator here in Ohio -- is more than just a pet for owners Michael and Cindy Weier. (SOUNDBITE) MICHAEL WEIER SAYING: "He knows something is going on." Goodbyes come hard after 13 years. (SOUNDBITE) MICHAEL WEIER SAYING: "For me it's a loss because I've had him for 13 years. I don't have any kids, this is my kid." (NAT SOUND STATE TRUCK ROLLS IN) He's surrendering the animal because Ohio's exotic animal law is too expensive. He doesn't think it's right. (SOUNDBITE) MICHAEL WEIER SAYING: "They take away my rights as a responsible pet owner. I've never done anything wrong, I've never done anything wrong with him... It's sad, it's sad." The insurance on Arnold would have cost Michael nearly three thousand dollars, and he just can't afford it. But for him, it's not about the money, it's about the principle. (SOUNDBITE) MICHAEL WEIER SAYING: "You punish the people that do the wrong, you don't punish everybody." The alligator will be taken to a state holding facility. (NATURAL SOUND) "One, two, three." ...where he will await a new home.
