Dalai Lama protesters along the streets of Washington are saying "Dalai Lama stop lying."
They gathered during the spiritual leader's visit to the U.S. capital.
Members of the Shugden community, a form of Buddhism that the Dalai Lama himself reportedly calls a "cult," are making their voices heard.
They say he has persecuted followers of an ancient deity that the Tibetan spiritual leader denounced decades ago.
(SOUNDBITE) REBECCA FOLEY SAYING:
"Dorje Shugden is a prayer about wisdom, and it's illogical and obscured to say that this prayer is harmful to him, Tibetans, or the cause in any way."
The Shugden community includes around 4 million people around the world.
Students of the Dalai Lama also gathered on the opposite side of the street, welcoming the presence of their spiritual leader.
