Two killed after car crashes into crowd at Texas festival

March 13 - Police say they've taken into custody the driver suspected of plowing into a crowd at the South by Southwest festival killing two people and injuring at least 23. Deborah Gembara reports.

Police on the scene after a car crashed into the crowd at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. Two people - a man and a woman were killed when the car slammed through barricades. SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED EYEWITNESS SAYING: "All of a sudden this car came like driving through - hit like ten people." SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED EYEWITNESS SAYING: "Probably going like 70 miles per hour. He just took off, hit all these people right here. I think those people are dead, honestly, and a cop chased it, and now all the cops are here." Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo says the driver was fleeing police and was suspected of drunk driving. SOUNDBITE: ART ACEVEDO, AUSTIN POLICE CHIEF SAYING: "The driver then accelerated at a high rate of speed down the street right here behind me, Red River Street, and at a high rate of speed struck multiple pedestrians." The two people killed were reportedly on a moped. At least 23 were injured. Many were attending the music, film and media festival. The chase, says Acevedo, didn't end with crash. SOUNDBITE: ART ACEVEDO, AUSTIN POLICE CHIEF SAYING: "The suspect then exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. The officer was able to overtake him and was actually forced to tase him and to take him into custody." The driver faces two counts of capital murder.
