Move over ladies, men are elbowing their way into the roller derby. The American team took home the new Men's Roller Derby World Cup trophy this week, beating England 260-71. Canada finished third after defeating France and Australia eked out a win over Wales taking fifth place. A roller derby team is made up of five players, there's one scoring player known as a "jammer" and the rest of the team members work as blockers. Points are scored by the jammer every time he laps an opposing team's blockers. SOUNDBITE: Carl "Ol' Nerdy Bastard" Martinsson of Sweden, saying (English)": "It hurts, it hurts like crap. Especially when you meet guys from Anglo Saxon countries. They are doing lots of backwards controlling where they do a lot of shoulders. For us being a shorter team they hit us quite high and it is quite often to the face. When you fall you often fall on your sides you have like huge bruises on your legs. It hurts." Roller derby dates back to the 1930s. It began as an endurance race and eventually developed into a form of entertainment that featured scripted bouts. It has since seen a revival in the early 2000s as an amateur female competition in the US became something of a global phenomenon. Now, there are hundreds of leagues worldwide -- and the director of the men's competition Adam Roush says men have finally caught on. SOUNDBITE: Director of Competitions Adam "Stat Man" Roush, saying (English)": "Men are very much the underdogs in this sport, but as the men's World Cup, we actually want to thank women's roller derby for paving the way." After the success of this inaugural event organizers are already planning a second World Cup, while the women's tournament will take place in Dallas later this year.
