At least three dead in Jersey Shore motel fire

March 21 - A fire raced through a motel in the Jersey Shore town of Point Pleasant Beach, killing at least three people and injuring eight, authorities say. Jillian Kitchener reports.

Authorities say at least three people are dead after a fire swept through this Jersey Shore motel. Friday's blaze at Mariner's Cove Motor Inn was reported just after 5:30 A.M. (SOUNDBITE) (English) OCEAN COUNTY PROSECUTOR JOSEPH D CORONATO SAYING: "When the firemen got there, the building -- the motel -- was totally engulfed in flames at that time." Bodies were pulled from the ruins... A scary sight in the seaside town of Point Pleasant Beach. (SOUNDBITE) (English) OCEAN COUNTY PROSECUTOR JOSEPH D CORONATO SAYING: "Right now we're under search and recovery mode. Unfortunately we do have some fatalities. There were three deaths. It appears the three deaths are all male. There are eight people with injuries." Of the eight injuries reported, seven were civilians and one sheriff's officer. (SOUNDBITE) (English) OCEAN COUNTY PROSECUTOR JOSEPH D CORONATO SAYING: "So we're trying to totally ascertain who was in the motel at the time. But we do believe it was approximately 40 people. There's approximately 10 people that are unaccounted for." The cause of the fire is not yet known.
