ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Washington state authorities said on Sunday (March 23) that 18 people remain missing after a deadly mudslide the day before along the Stillaguamish River that killed at least three people and forced an evacuation of the area. "We have a report of 18 people that are unaccounted for," Snohomish County Fire Chief Travis Hots told reporters at a news conference. At least eight others were also injured in the landslide, which destroyed six or more homes along a state highway in northwest Washington state, officials said. The mudslide caused blockage of the Stillaguamish River, adding flooding to the mud problem, authorities said. "Remember that this is a river that is dumping into a lake. It is continuing to fill up and it is eventually going to go," warned John Pennington, Director of Snohomish County Dept of Emergency Management. "We really have two disaster operations going. One that has occurred. And the unique thing about this event is that there is another that most likely can occur. A disaster within a disaster," said Pennington.
