Three people died and at least eight others were injured in a landslide on Saturday. Mud slid across part of highway near Oso in Washington State, destroying six or more homes in its path. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SNOHOMISH COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT'S LT. RODNEY ROCHON, SAYING: "looks like 4 to 6 houses are now sitting in the middle of the highway." Lt. Rodney Rochon from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Department is helping with the recovery efforts. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SNOHOMISH COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT'S LT. RODNEY ROCHON, SAYING: "We're looking for victims and survivors at this time. We're still in search and rescue mode and hoping for the best." Officials are now worried about potential flooding in the area. Something a man on the scene is taking seriously: (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED MAN, SAYING: "River level has dropped - there's not very much water in the river right now so is it an attraction that people need to be aware that when that mudslide breaks loose, the water can travel down stream at a very high rate of speed and catch people unaware. And they could be swept away." Officials say heavy rains over the past several weeks are likely to blame for the mudslide.
