March 25 - At least 56 cases of mumps have been reported in Ohio in an outbreak that started at Ohio State University in Columbus, but has spread to people without ties to the school, public health officials say. Jillian Kitchener reports.

At least 56 cases of mumps have been reported in Ohio. The outbreak started at Ohio State University but has spread to people without ties to the school (SOUNDBITE) (English) COLUMBUS HEALTH DEPARTMENT, DR. MYKEISHA ROBERTS, SAYING: "Our cases that aren't associated with OSU really have no connection to each other because we've asked them all these questions. 'Did you go to a sporting event? Have you been on campus? Have you interacted with OSU faculty, staff or students?'" It's difficult to gauge the full scope of the infection. (SOUNDBITE) (English) COLUMBUS HEALTH DEPARTMENT, DR. MYKEISHA ROBERTS, SAYING: "All it takes is one person to go into a very concentrated area, like campus, with the infection and easily spread it to others." Some people are not surprised its spreading. (SOUNDBITE) (English) BLAKE BISHOP, SAYING: "I'm surprised it actually stayed within campus for as long as it did before starting to hear cases outside of it. It almost seems like it was inevitable." The Columbus Health Department is recommending people get vaccinated as soon as possible.
